I. Department introduction

Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Industry is one of the main departments providing education and training for pharmacy students at the School of Medicine, Vietnam Nation University Ho Chi Minh City. Our department teaches, researches, and collaborates with society on issues related to drug development and manufacturing. Our courses are constantly updated with new research findings and the latest updates of pharmaceutical technology. Courses are taught by well-trained and experienced teachers who are also active researchers and industrial collaborators. Many courses also feature external guest lecturers from the pharmaceutical industry, authorities, and other parts of society. Our department centers its research on key areas, including Drug Delivery, Rational Drug Design and Biopharmaceutics, scale-up of drug manufacturing.

II. History of establishment

Our department was founded in accordance with the decision No. 247/QĐ-KY on December 5, 2017 of​​ Dean of the School of Medicine, VNU-HCM.

The former head of department was Prof. Le Minh Tri. From August 2023, Dr. Nguyen​​ Phuoc Vinh is in the office. Currently, our department consists of 03 lecturers; 01 teaching assistant and 01 Lab technician.

III. Focused areas of teaching and research

1. Teaching

Pharmaceutical Skills Laboratory (Semester 1): 01 credit.

Pharmaceutical physical chemistry (Semester 3): 03 credits.

Pharmaceutics 1 (Semester 7): 04 credits.

Pharmaceutics 2 (Semester 8): 04 credits.

Pharmaceutical Industry (Semester 8): 03 credits.

Pharmaceutical Manufacturing (Semester 8): 02 credits.

Drug research and development (Semester 9): 03 credits.

Drug packaging​ (Study period 9): 02 credits.

Internship: 08 credits only.

2. Research

Extract and standardize plant-based medicinal ingredients to develop medicinal and supplement products;

Enhance the solubility and bioavailability of pharmaceutical active ingredients with techniques using solid dispersion systems, nanotechnology, 3D printing technology and electrospinning technology;

Investigate the effectiveness and safety of drugs through in vitro and in vivo models;

Develop/Optimize formulations and production processes for drugs, cosmetics and healthcare products;

Develop quality standards, pilot and scale-up study on an industrial scale.

V. Functions and responsibility

1. Functions

Provide basic knowledge and practical skills in preparation (including operations and use of some tools in the field of preparation, skills in preparing some simple dosage forms such as solutions, powder medicine, granules, ointment, etc.) as a foundation to help students apply it well in related professional subjects.

Provides knowledge and skills for undergraduate and postgraduate students about drug production and development, and pharmaceutical care: Mixing techniques, formula development, methods, and procedures. Preparation of drug forms and drug delivery systems; pharmaceutical extraction techniques, development of modern dosage forms for drugs of natural origin; biopharmaceuticals and bioequivalence assessment; Studying drug stability.

2. Responsibility

Teaching & Training: Out department provides fundamental knowledge and professional training for undergraduate modules specialized in pharmaceutics and drug manufacturing, with a great emphasis on laboratory skills and independent learning. Taught modules include Pharmaceutical Skills Laboratory, Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics 1 & 2, Pharmaceutical Industry, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Drug Research and Development, and Packaging of Drug Products. We also mentor undergraduate and post-graduate students in carrying out their graduation thesis and scientific research activities.

Scientific research: Our research in the Department has constantly evolved over the years, by covering highly diversified research topics and industry-linked disciplines. Our research activities focally undertake both basic and translational research projects to improve the efficacy of therapeutic interventions by innovating drug dosage forms coupled with advanced drug delivery techniques. In addition to the departmental research projects, many of us also participate in specialized research initiatives, some of which are interdisciplinary, inter-departmental, or inter-institutional which focus on developing active pharmaceutical ingredients from both synthetic and natural origins, improving pharmacological activities through modernizing drug dosage forms and innovating manufacturing processes of solid and semi-solid drug products. In this way, we can establish a wide collaborative network to achieve our research objectives with different stakeholders in academia and industry.
