  • Formation and Development:

The Department of Economic, Social, and Administrative Pharmacy has evolved alongside the formation and development of the pharmacy sector at the University of Health Sciences, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly the School of Medicine, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City). The department was formally established according to Decision No. 244/QD-KY dated December 5, 2017, issued by the Dean of the School, outlining the organizational structure, and Decision No. 435/QD-DHQG dated May 29, 2017, issued by the Director of Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City, approving the organizational structure of the pharmacy sector under the university.

Since its inception, the department has been in charge of delivering courses related to pharmaceutical legislations, economics, pharmacoeconomics, drug supply management, and administration. The department is also in charge of courses under the specialized orientation of Drug Management and Supply, one of three specialized orientations in the undergraduate pharmacy program. In line with the revised Pharmacy curriculum, effective from the 2023 batch, the  Department of Economic, Social, and Administrative Pharmacy coordinates with the Department of Pharmacology – Clinical Pharmacy to deliver courses within the Pharmaceutical care orientation. This aims to provide students with diverse knowledge, skills, and competencies in management, pharmacoeconomics, drug supply, and clinical pharmacy, offering a comprehensive overview of drug supply and usage management in both patient care and community health contexts.

After more than six years of formation and development, the Department of Economic, Social, and Administrative Pharmacy has achieved significant accomplishments as outlined below

About lecturers

The department’s lecturers are pharmacists who graduated from leading Vietnamese pharmacy universities, with all full-time lecturers having received postgraduate training from prestigious universities in the region and worldwide, including Mahidol University – Thailand, Seoul National University – Korea, and the University of Utah – USA.

In addition to full-time lecturers, the department also invites visiting lecturers who are reputable experts in drug management and supply, pharmaceutical marketing, and management. This not only allows students to learn from experts, stay updated with pharmacy development trends, and gain diverse perspectives but also find inspiration and passion for the mission of public healthcare. 

About teaching and training

Aligned with the educational philosophy of the University of Health Sciences – Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh city, “Holistic education – Student-centred approach”, the department annually reviews and adjusts course syllabi and learning outcomes to enhance teaching and learning quality. Active teaching methods are incorporated into each course to help students master knowledge and practical skills.

The department delivers core courses that meet common learning outcomes for all students, including Pharmacy Ethics, Pharmacy Legislation, Evidence-based Pharmacy, Introduction to Economics and Health Economics, Pharmaceutical Supply Management, and Research Methodology. For students who choose to specialize in pharmaceutical care, the department delivers specialized courses encompassing Pharmacoeconomics, Business Administration, Community Pharmacy, Professional practice in Pharmacy Care, Communication skills applied in Pharmacy, Marketing and pharmaceutical markets, and Systematic review and meta-analysis in health sciences. 

Additionally, to provide students with early access to a real working environment and a better understanding of job requirements for a pharmacist, the department emphasizes collaboration with reputable entities in the pharmacy and health sectors, such as health facilities, hospitals, pharmacies, and pharmaceutical businesses. This allows students to gain practical experience.

Furthermore, aiming to develop into a specialized field, the department is developing postgraduate programs, including specialty and master’s degrees, contributing to training high-quality human resources for the pharmacy sector in Vietnam.

1.2. Function and responsibilities

Function

The Department of Economic, Social, and Administrative Pharmacy is a specialized and functional unit that has the following responsibilities:

a) Manage department’s lecturers and employees;

b) Provide undergraduate and postgraduate training in the fields of Economics, Social, and Administrative Pharmacy, providing students and trainees with a foundation of basic and advanced knowledge to assist them in meeting their future work and research.

c) Conduct scientific research, technology transfer, professional consultation, and other activities in pharmaceutical administration and economics, as well as related sectors.

 Responsibilities

a) Oversee department’s employees, and students as delegated; Propose modifications to the department’s organization and personnel.

b) Formulate a strategy to develop the teaching staff, training professions, and facilities to support scientific research and training in the context of standardization, social justice, and international integration.

c) Organize the evaluation of department managers, lecturers, and other employees in accordance with the University regulations and guidance. 

d) Develop and plan the execution of educational and training initiatives in accordance with the University’s overarching strategy, which encompasses:

– Develop and revise training programs, projects, documents, and textbooks in accordance with the development orientation of the University

– Develop and revise course syllabi under the department’s supervision to guarantee that they are up to date and satisfy training program output requirements.

– Enhance teaching and learning methods; 

– Develop and implement appropriate methods to evaluate students’ learning outcomes, guarantee students meet the program learning outcomes and satisfy the demands of the job market.

e) Plan and implement research activities and international collaborations. Closely collaborate with other departments and units in the University as well as external organizations (science and technology centers, manufacturing facilities, and businesses involved in the training industry) to enhance the practicality and interdisciplinary nature of teaching and research focused on pharmaceutical care.

f) Others

  • Engage in union activities as well as other faculty-assigned tasks; 
  • Take part in community service and connection activities, such as industry policy development and drafting, social needs-based training, on-site training, scientific service provision, and volunteer work.
