The pursuit of medicine is not only a hardship but also an immeasurable pride. The ceremony of white coat marks a profound transformation – the embodiment of the doctor’s will, their solemn responsibility, and the deep honour bestowed upon them.

Prof. PhD. MD.  Dang Van Phuoc, Dean of the School of Medicine, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh city, shared with 550 freshmen of the academic year 2023-2024 at the white coat ceremony.

For the first time, the School of Medicine – Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, held a ceremony to don blouse for freshmen on the 69th anniversary of Vietnamese Doctor’s Day (27th February, 1955 – 27th February, 2024). Attending the celebration were Assoc. Prof. PhD. Vu Hai Quan – Chancellor of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City; Board of Deans and all lecturers and students of the School of Medicine. Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Dang Van Phuoc emphasised that the white blouse has great spiritual significance for people working in the medical field in general as well as medical students in particular.

“When adorned in the white blouse, each student experiences a surge of pride and societal recognition. This serves as a powerful motivator, fuelling their commitment to rigorous training, continuous learning, and the pursuit of becoming dedicated and ethical doctors.,” Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc mentioned.

Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc also stated that the medical profession which is extremely sacred and noble is one of the two professions honoured by public since this key-role profession is directly related to human life. In particular, for officials and lecturers of the School of Medicine – VNU-HCM, this responsibility is even higher when they are both “physicians” and “teachers”.

The School of Medicine – VNU-HCM organises the 69th Anniversary of the Vietnamese Doctor’s Day on 27th February and the White Coat Ceremony for the academic year 2023 – 2024.

“Therefore, this is not only an opportunity for all of us to be proud of the noble profession we are pursuing, but also to reflect on ourselves, to be more aware of our responsibility to the profession, to not only be the protector and care for the people’s health but also to inspire passion to the next generations of doctors with good mind and talent, aiming to construct an increasingly strong Vietnamese health care system,”.

Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc also reminded the students: “The white blouse you are about to don is not only an individual but also a symbol of the medical profession, the image of the school, the hospital, the belief in a good future. For this sacred moment, I hope that you will always be steadfast in your chosen path, striving to become a doctor of medicine, good at medicine and rich in ethics”.
