School of Medicine – VNUHCM Introduces “Comprehensive PBL Teaching Method In Health Science Training” Course in 2023.

On 6th November, 2023, School of Medicine – VNUHCM took a significant step forward by commencing a comprehensive training programme focused on problem-based teaching methodologies (Problem-Based Learning – PBL). This training initiative is designed to enhance the proficiency of all full-time lecturers at the School of Medicine – VNU-HCM and has been instrumental in elevating the standards of health science education at the institution over the years. The PBL training course is scheduled in two consecutive days, from 6th November to 7th November, 2023, and will be held at the Y.A1 Administrative Building.

During the inaugural ceremony, Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc, Dean of the School of Medicine – VNU-HCM, proudly declared the institution’s pioneering role in the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) teaching method. With over a decade of successful practice, this approach has demonstrated its correctness and effectiveness, aligning seamlessly with the School of Medicine – VNU-HCM’s educational philosophy of “Holistic education- Student-centered approach”

Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc, Dean of the School of Medicine, delivered the opening address at the training course.

In regards to the PBL method and its guiding principles, Prof. PhD. MD. Tran Thi Loi, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaeology and Reproductive Health and a PBL expert, emphasised its transformative nature by stating, “The inherent beauty of PBL lies in its ability to empower students to independently explore uncharted territories. Through this method, students take charge of designing, planning, and executing projects, thereby fostering a profound understanding and retention of the knowledge they have acquired.”

Prof. PhD. MD. Tran Thi Loi, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaeology and Reproductive Health, delivered the speech at the training course.

Following the commencement, a total of 52 students enrolled in the course were divided into 4 groups, actively participating in practical exercises centered around case studies involving both lecturers and fellow students.

Concluding the programme, Prof. PhD. MD Dang Van Phuoc, alongside the organisers, presented participants with certificates of completion, signifying the successful culmination of the training course. Additionally, an interactive session was held, allowing teachers to pose inquiries and provide valuable feedback, contributing to the ongoing refinement and enhanced efficacy of the training programme.

In his address during the closing ceremony, he emphasised the immense value of participating in this practical experience, highlighting its pivotal role in fostering students’ professional growth. Additionally, Prof. PhD. MD Dang Van Phuoc conveyed his sincere wishes for the teachers’ continued well-being, urging them to perpetuate their unwavering passion and enthusiasm in their noble pursuit of educating and shaping future generations.
