Doctors must convince patients with scientific evidence and medical knowledge, not with soothing and empty words.

That is the viewpoint of Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc, Head of the School of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, shared in an interview conducted by VnExpress.

Currently, there are 27 medical schools in the country, and the main method of admission is based on the high school graduation exam scores, commonly in the combination of Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology (B00) or Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry (A00).

This year, many universities have diversified their admission methods and combinations. Some universities have included Vietnamese literature in the combination for evaluation, which has caused mixed reactions. Some believe that this is only a strategic admission approach and may compromise the quality of incoming students.

Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc, Chairman of the Professor Council of the Medical field, and Head of the School of Medicine Vietnam National University of Ho Chi Minh City, further analyzed the interviewing process for candidates who wish to study medicine.

Accordingly, candidates who pass the preliminary selection will be interviewed by a board consisting of doctors, psychological experts, and lecturers. The interview assesses the candidates’ social knowledge, their perspective on serving people, ethics, and other qualities to determine their suitability for the medical field.

According to Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc, the medical admission dossier should include a written essay that explains the candidate’s reasons and aspirations for choosing this field. The essay is considered along with the interview results since these are factors that cannot be reflected solely by the scores in the three subjects of the exam.

“After more than 50 years in this profession, I have realized that studying and practicing medicine without passion makes it difficult to develop and overcome the hardships to stay committed to the profession. Without passion, doctors will quickly become disinterested, work half-heartedly, and easily go down the wrong path,” shared Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc, explaining the reasons for including a written essay and interview in medical admissions.

If medical and pharmaceutical schools still admit students based on the scores of the three subjects, Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc believes that the subjects should be Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology. He respects the opinion of including Vietnamese literature in the admission combination but does not entirely agree with it.

Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc, Chairman of the Professor Council of the Medical field, the Dean of the School of Medicine Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

During the six years of study, in addition to their specialised subjects, students have to study courses such as Hospital Life, Medical Psychology and Ethics, Health Education. Throughout the training and practical work in hospitals, students will be guided by professors and colleagues to cultivate medical ethics, share skills, understand patients’ psychology, learn how to write theses and medical records, and improve their communication and presentation skills, he added.
