On 15th September 2023, the Final Round of “One Health Contest 2023” took place at the International University, Vietnam National University.

In the final result, the School of Medicine – VNU-HCM marked the third prize for the project “Predicting lung metastases in breast cancer patients using big data analysis and machine learning” by student Nguyen Tuong Van, with guidance by Dr. Nguyen Minh Nam (Department of Biomedical Engineering) and Mr. Nguyen Thanh Dat (Research Center for Genetics and Reproductive Health, School of Medicine – VNU-HCM).

School of Medicine – VNU-HCM’s student won the Third place

Breast cancer, the most prevalent cancer among women, presents a significant risk due to its propensity to metastasise, often affecting the lungs. Enhancing the survival rates of patients with lung metastases remains a formidable challenge. Therefore, the identification of biomarkers for predicting lung metastases holds immense importance as it allows for early detection and targeted interventions, ultimately leading to improved survival rates.

For this study, the author utilised three datasets (GSE2603, GSE11078, and E-MTAB-365) comprising gene expression profiles and clinical data collected from breast cancer patients (82, 23, and 412 patients, respectively). Employing the AdaBoost algorithm, the author developed a model that leveraged gene expression data to predict the risk of lung metastasis. Through rigorous regression analysis, the AdaBoost-based model accurately identified breast cancer patients at high risk of lung metastasis. This breakthrough may enable clinicians to assess the likelihood of lung metastases more effectively and tailor treatment strategies to individual patients.

“One Health Contest” is organized by Research Center for Infectious Diseases – RCID at International University – VNU-HCM, with the aim of providing high school and university students in Ho Chi Minh City with an opportunity to showcase their creativity, engage in discussions, and connect with experts in the field of biomedical science. The competition includes two rounds:

Preliminary round – submit a research abstract in any biomedical field (for a complete research/dissertation) or an Innovative idea in any biomedical field (for a research proposal) in English.

Final Round – Poster Presentation, held on September 15, 2023. Participants have 10 minutes to present and 5 minutes to answer questions from the review panel.

The prize for Third prize includes 2,000,000 VND and a certificate.
