In the bustling and exciting atmosphere of welcoming the new school year, on the morning of September 28th, the School of Medicine held the opening ceremony of the new academic year 2023 – 2024 at Tran Chi Dao Hall – VNUHCM.

During the ceremony, Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc, the Dean of the School of Medicine – VNUHCM, expressed his satisfaction with the remarkable achievements accomplished by the unit across various fields during the 2022-2023 academic year. These achievements have laid a strong foundation for the School’s future development. Currently, the School is responsible for the education and training of nearly 2,000 students, out of which 842 are physicians and pharmacists actively contributing to the healthcare system of the country.

Prof. PhD.MD. Dang Van Phuoc, the Dean of the School of Medicine, delivered a compelling speech during the opening ceremony

Prof. PhD. Dr. Dang Van Phuoc highlighted that, for the current academic year, the School of Medicine – VNUHCM successfully admitted 555 students across five majors, including Medicine, Pharmacy, Odonto-Stomatology, Traditional Medicine, and Nursing. Notably, this year also marks the first enrollment of postgraduate students in SoM – VNUHCM, including Specialist Level 1 and Resident doctors in nine training majors such as Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Otolaryngology, etc.

In the upcoming 2023-2024 school year, the School of Medicine – VNUHCM is set to implement new training changes. One significant change is the assessment of the Faculty’s Medicine programme for quality accreditation following the standards set by the ASEAN University Network (AUN). This accreditation process serves to validate the quality of the training programmes and acts as a foundation for facilitating student exchange and credit recognition between universities within and outside the Southeast Asia region. This opens up numerous opportunities for collaborative training initiatives among students.

MBA. Nguyen Hoang Dung, the Standing Deputy Dean of the School of Medicine – VNUHCM, was honoured to receive sponsorship from various units during the ceremony.

As per the outlined plan, the School of Medicine aims to initiate the construction of three buildings in the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. These buildings will house the departments of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Otolaryngology. Additionally, they will be equipped with state-of-the-art practice laboratories. This development will be situated within the VNUHCM Urban Area, providing students with modern facilities, and enhanced practical learning opportunities.

Assoc. Prof. PhD. Nguyen Minh Tam, the VNUHCM Deputy Director, and Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc, the Dean of the School of Medicine – VNUHCM, extended their commendations to the new students who achieved valedictorian entry in their respective majors.

During the ceremony, the School of Medicine – VNUHCM also presented scholarships (worth 15 million VND each) to 10 outstanding new students who achieved the top ranking in each major. Additionally, the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City Development Fund recognised the exceptional academic performance of two students by awarding them valedictorian entrance scholarships. Each of these scholarships amounted to 40 million VND. These scholarships aim to acknowledge and support the academic achievements of these students as they embark on their educational journey within the School of Medicine – VNUHCM.

“To gain admission to the School of Medicine – VNUHCM, you have already completed a challenging 12-year journey marked by your unwavering dedication. Your decision to pursue medicine as your career path is highly commendable, as a prosperous nation undoubtedly relies on the health and well-being of its citizens.
