On the morning of June 14, 2023, more than 500 lecturers and students from the School of Medicine Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) held a dialogue session with scientists from Johns Hopkins University (USA) at the forum “Dialogue with Pioneers in Global Medical Research.” The event was hosted by the VNU-HCM School of Medicine in partnership with Johns Hopkins University at the VNU-HCM Headquarters.

Presenters from John Hopkins University

Three presenters from Johns Hopkins University attended the forum: Prof. PhD. MD. Anthony Kalloo, Prof. PhD. MD Benjamin Philosophe, and Assoc. Prof. PhD. MD. James Hamilton. During their studies and research in the field of health sciences, the speakers held conversations and directly addressed the issues of students.

According to Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc, learning and research are critical for individuals working in the field of health sciences. Medical knowledge today is based on the scientific achievements of previous generations and is linked to future advances. “Intellectual and knowledge from the past are invaluable resources that can lead us to greater advancements.” Let us carry on their intelligence, embarking on a voyage of discovery, continuation, and development. “The School of Medicine is taking the lead in this noble goal,” remarked Prof. PhD. MD. Dang Van Phuoc. He also emphasised the importance of the dialogue session for students, as the practical knowledge and experiences shared by leading researchers from Johns Hopkins University would provide additional motivation for students to acquire knowledge and serve as a foundation for the continuous development of health sciences, with students being the next generation.

Prof. PhD. MD. Anthony Kalloo, who shared the same viewpoint, added, “Students need to choose a good advisor with extensive experience to guide them on the right path for their future.” This external influence is vital, but so is each student’s inherent spirit and passion for learning and study. One can develop and enhance oneself through research and the acquisition of fresh knowledge. “You must have the desire to help patients, not only by providing treatment methods but also by striving to improve their health,” he stated.

In addition to providing professional experience, the speakers also provided helpful advice to the students. Assoc. Prof. PhD. MD. James Hamilton emphasized that “the medical field is the perfect path to help humanity and make the world a better place.” Prof. PhD. MD. Benjamin Philosophe passionately stated that “a doctor who works with purpose and a spirit of contributing to society will be a successful doctor.” The speakers’ earnest advice inspired future generations of medical students, particularly those at the School of Medicine, and students in the field of health sciences in general.
