In the training programme at the School of Medicine VNU-HCM, first-year medical students always learn the Module “Hospital Life” to soon be exposed to the familiar working environment after graduation.

On June 30th, 2023, students in Group 1 (Class Y2022) finished five days of experiencing the “Hospital Life” module at Children’s Hospital 1, but for them, it was the beginning of a new life, a new process, and a never-ending journey of learning to be able to advance in medicine. The group was separated into five subgroups at the hospital. Every day, we learn about different departments, such as Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine 1, Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, and Emergency Medicine. Also, we were introduced to each department as well as the technological equipment needed to treat patients.

“This is the first time we have had the opportunity to directly interact with patients to hone our professional skills. In addition to observing the doctors and nurses taking care of the patient’s health, we also attended two briefings with the Hospital’s Board of Directors – this was a report on important hospital issues: no. deaths, the number of severe transfers, large reception meetings, reports, and hospital records. In addition, Assoc. Prof. PhD. MD. Nguyen Thanh Hung – Director of Children’s Hospital 1, Head of the Department of Paediatrics – School of Medicine, Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City, also created an opportunity for us to attend the ScienceTechnique Event “IgA vasculitis comes from clinical practice”, shared Nguyen Dang Duy.

And Le Hoang Do Dat added, “We also visited the Social Work Department under the welcome of Dr. Truong Huu Khanh – Head of the Social Work Department of the Hospital, an expert in Epidemiology, and former Head of the Department of Infection – Neurology. The Social Work Department is the unit that organises activities for children, the most annual is Pink Birthday for the children once a month.”

“We were also given a session by the hospital’s Director to introduce an overview of the hospital’s organisational structure and operation, as well as our experiences on the path to becoming doctors. The individual who conducts the initial orientation into the route of medicine is incredibly essential to him. He explained that a medical officer’s purpose is to care for the health of the community, which requires them to be professional not only in their profession but even in the smallest chores” Bao Chau opened up.

For medical students, the term “hospital clinical internship” is not new.  Future doctors should familiarise themselves with “hospitalisation, follow-up,” consolidate specialist information, enhance abilities, and improve communication skills with patients and colleagues during this period. Students, particularly freshmen, benefit from early exposure to this environment. “It was a meaningful experience that I kept as valuable documents on my career path to revisit every time I think about my career decisions,” Ly Gia Han said of her five days of getting to know the hospital atmosphere. I selected my job, but I try to be more driven to be worthy of being given the authority to examine patients like the doctors I respect when I see them.”

“With the experience of 5 days at Children’s Hospital 1 in the Hospital Life Module, although it is quite short, it really gave us close-ups and The most honest about the working process and the smooth coordination between departments, between doctors and nurses during the process of examining patients, creating a great team and having the same goal,” Lai Thi Hong Linh shared with her friend. “Patient Care” is at the heart of everything. Furthermore, I am aware of the enormous responsibility that medical personnel must bear while examining patients.”

The Hospital Life Module provides enormous value to medical students. Only through objective and realistic experiences in the future would they be able to appreciate the trials as well as the glory of the profession, providing them with a greater desire to strive for progress and train seriously before the long voyage ahead. The medical profession is a distinct enterprise that bears a significant degree of responsibility for human health and life.

“For me, the experience of hospital life has taught me a lot of good lessons for my own path forward. Children’s Hospital 1 – where she got her first clinical internship, marked an important milestone for a student of health sciences. All emotions are found here, from nervousness and anxiety to joy mixed with a little bit of pressure and then a sad farewell. When I said goodbye to Children’s Hospital 1, a “recently close” friend had to part with a longing heart, but it was a motivation for me to keep trying hard, promoting what I’ve done. I learned here to later become a health care doctor for the community with a high level of expertise.” Dieu Phuoc An opens his heart.

With such rich practical experiences, students will undoubtedly gain more experience, skills, and a solid foundation for their future jobs. Students’ efforts also serve as motivation for the School of Medicine to continue to improve the quality of training programs in accordance with the School of Medicine’s basic values: “Comprehensive Education – Learners are the Centre.”
